Chapter 16

Gloriana

“Sounds like you’ve had a rough go,” Merc said after I’d sobbed into her shoulder for a minute.

Kenji and Angel huddled awkwardly close but didn’t touch me as Merc kept me gathered in her arms. She pulled me inside, and both of them followed.

Merc sat me down on the couch and fixed me with a stern look. Compared to her usual outfits, what Merc wore today looked positively plain. A baggy t-shirt over pants, and without any of her usual cuffs and other accessories? Where was the Merc I knew? It must be early on a weekend; that was the only explanation. Even her bubblegum pink hair had faded back to her usual brown, more in keeping with her olive complexion. She must not have dyed it in the last month or so.

I recounted my many failures to Merc while curled up on one corner of the old couch. I still sensed the Tree of Life looming in the back of my mind, a silent spectator of my suffering via something like a consort bond. Before, I couldn’t sense it while outside the Encante, but our link must be stronger now. Just another sign that I’d taken a wrong turn in the ceremony somehow, only tying Elves to the Tree.

“But it doesn’t sound like any of it was your fault.” Merc crossed her arms. “No one else could’ve done any better.”

“That’s not true,” I said in a low voice, struggling to force the sobs down. “Una or Maeve, either of them could’ve—”

Merc waved me off. “Wasn’t your fault. No one knew this would happen. The result would have been the same with the exception of Iona’s gloating.”

“The Unseelie—”

“Could be waging war against the Seelie right now, intent on murdering another queen, instead of hanging around in their hideouts reveling in their good fortune.” Merc narrowed her eyes at me. “I don’t like seeing you like this, Glori.” She tilted her head, considering me in the way that always made me worry. “You know what you need?”

I watched as she raised her phone high, as though it could save me from all of my woes. Angel and Kenji looked as confused as I felt.

“I had to go through a breakup recently, and I think we could both use…” Merc hesitated for effect, “some breakup music!”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at her pronouncement, but I quickly sobered. “I’m sorry I wasn’t here to give you a shoulder to cry on.”

“I’m sure it was very traumatic for Jovanka.” Merc gave me a wicked grin.

“You didn’t—” The thought of the powerful Veela warrior putting up with a crying, heartbroken Merc made me chuckle. Hard enough to imagine a heartbroken Merc to begin with.

Kenji and Angel both laughed. It was good to see Angel’s lopsided grin as he asked, “Can you even imagine?”

But even as I looked back and forth between the guys — so out of place in their Fae fabrics, sitting on an ancient couch on top of carpet from the 80s — my anxieties returned.
